- Open-End Design: Allows for visual inspection of wire location before and after crimping.
- Multiple "V" Grooves: Provide maximum hold on wire for excellent holding power.
- High-Quality Injection Molded Insulations: Made from durable, temperature-resistant electrical grade materials (221F/105C rated).
- Crimp Ridge: Ensures positive tool location for fewer miscrimps.
- Non-Slip Ridge: Aids in correct tool positioning for better workmanship.
- Beveled Leading Edge: Facilitates easy wire insulation entry.
Barrel Styles:
- Non-Insulated: Available in Butted Seam (economical, beveled mouth) and Brazed Seam (silver brazed seam prevents wire escape). Maximum temperature: 347F (175C).
- Vinyl Insulated: Brazed or Butted Seams with a flared, rigid molded polyvinyl chloride sleeve. Funneled for easy wire entry, provides electrical contact and mechanical stress relief. Non-slip ridge for tool positioning. Rated for -40F to 221F (-40C to 105C). UL Listed and CSA Certified for 600V building wire and 1000V signs and lighting fixtures.
- Nylon Insulated with Insulation Grip: Butted seam barrels with a seamless brass sleeve for optimum grip and strain relief. Brass sleeve is recessed for flash-over protection. Standard color coding for wire range. Rated for -40F to 221F (-40C to 105C). UL Listed and CSA Certified for 600V building wire and 1000V signs and lighting fixtures.
Heat Shrink Terminals, Connectors and Disconnects:
Offer superior moisture protection and corrosion resistance with adhesive-lined heat shrink material. Provide improved mechanical performance with enhanced pullout strength and strain relief. Durable heat shrink tubing resists abrasion and aging. Available in wire sizes 2210 AWG.
High Temperature Terminals and Connectors:
Constructed of steel with nickel plating. Rated for continuous use at 900F (482C). Ideal for ovens, motors, and light fixtures. No applicable UL or CSA standard for these parts.
Terminal Numbering System Overview:
3M terminals follow a numbering system that indicates Identity Code/Barrel Style, Wire Size Code (AWG), Tongue Code, and Product Availability. Color coding for wire range: Yellow (26-24 AWG), Red (22-18 AWG), Blue (16-14 AWG), Yellow (12-10 AWG), Red (8 AWG), Blue (6 AWG), Yellow (4 AWG).
Example Product Number Breakdown:
MNG18-4 FB/SK: M (3M Identity), NG (Nylon w/ Grip), 18 (Wire Range 22-18 AWG), 4 (Stud Size), FB (Fork, Block), S (Short), K (Bulk Packaging).
Frequently Asked Questions:
- Insulation Grip: Provides a second crimp on wire insulation for additional strain relief, excellent for high vibration applications.
- Tool Compatibility: Refer to pages 143-144 for a variety of compatible tools.
- Insulated vs. Fully Insulated Disconnects: Insulated disconnects have barrel insulation only; fully insulated disconnects are insulated from barrel to receptacle/tab.
Glossary of Terms:
- Adapters: To interconnect two connectors already attached to wires.
- Block Fork: Same strength as a fork, designed for terminal blocks with flat sides against the barrier.
- Bullet Style: Reliable in-line connection with holding friction when joined, often used in automotive applications.
- Butt Connectors: Chamfered barrel ends for fast wire insertion from both ends, with a built-in wire stop. Must be crimped at both ends.
- Closed-End Connectors: Used for pigtailing two or more wires.
- Flanged Fork: Combines benefits of block and locking forks, stays secure if screw loosens.
- Fork: Allows rapid wire connection, typically used on free-standing studs due to wider tongues.
- Locking Fork: Spring-like tongue locks around the stud, even if the mounting screw is loose. Requires extra force for removal.
- Parallel Connectors: Similar to butt connectors but with overlapped wires and a single center crimp, used where space is limited.
- Pins: For installation in compression blocks, commonly used in Europe for terminating stranded wire.
- Quick Connect (Disconnect): Female part slips over male tab for quick connection/disconnection.
- Ring Tongues: Standard tongue style, safest and most reliable, removable only after mounting screw is removed.
- Tabs: Use mounting hole for rivet or screw.
- Taps: No wire stripping needed; lay wire in connector and crimp for connection.
Installation Procedure for Heat Shrink Products:
- Strip wires to appropriate length as indicated on package label.
- Insert wire into terminal and crimp with the correct station of a recommended tool.
- Apply heat with a recommended heat source.
Crimp Terminal and Connector Specifications:
- Materials: Crimp terminals and connectors are burr-free, annealed, and bright-tin plated ETP copper. Brazed seams where specified. Insulation grip sleeves are tin-plated brass and securely attached. Insulators are molded polyvinyl chloride or nylon.
- Construction: Insulated terminals have funnel entry construction and a crimp ridge. Nylon insulated terminals have butted seam barrels with insulation grip sleeves. All terminal barrels have multiple "V" grooves for maximum conductor retention.
