Frequently Asked Questions:
- Insulation Grip: Provides a second crimp on wire insulation for additional strain relief, ideal for high vibration applications.
- Tool Compatibility: Refer to pages 143-144 for a variety of compatible tools.
- Insulated vs. Fully Insulated Disconnects: Insulated disconnects have barrel insulation only, while fully insulated disconnects are insulated from barrel to receptacle/tab.
- Temperature Resistance: Non-insulated terminals withstand up to 347F (175C); Insulated terminals withstand up to 221F (105C).
Glossary of Terms:
- Adapters: To interconnect two connectors already attached to wires.
- Block Fork: Same strength as a standard fork, but designed for terminal blocks with flat sides against the barrier.
- Butt Connector: Features chamfered barrel ends for fast wire insertion from both ends and a built-in wire stop. Must be crimped at both ends.
- Closed-End Connector: Used for pigtailing two or more wires.
- Fork: Allows rapid wire connection, typically used on free-standing studs due to wider tongues.
- Locking Fork: Spring-like tongue locks onto the stud, even if the mounting screw is loose.
- Parallel Connector: Similar to a butt connector but with overlapped wires and a single center crimp, used where space is limited.
- Pin Terminal: For installation in compression blocks, commonly used in Europe for terminating stranded wire.
- Quick Connect (Disconnect): Attached by the female parts tongue slipping over the male tab, providing excellent holding force and easy disconnection.
- Ring Tongue: Standard tongue style, offering the safest and most reliable connection.
- Tap: Requires no wire stripping; lay wire in connector and crimp.
Standard Terminal Construction Features:
- One-piece, burr-free construction: Maximizes electrical conductivity. Electrical bright-tin plating provides corrosion resistance. Annealing relieves stress points for maximum installed strength.
- Barrel-to-pad transition design: Minimizes flexing and bending.
- Open-end design: Allows visual inspection of wire location before and after crimping.
- Maximum wire hold: Multiple V grooves (on #264 AWG parts) ensure excellent holding power.
- Injection molded insulations: High-quality, 221F (105C) rated, electrical grade materials. Consistent wall thickness for reliability, funnel barrel construction for easier installation, and molded crimp/non-slip ridges.
- Crimp ridge: Ensures positive tool location on the terminal barrel, reducing miscrimps.
- Funnel barrel construction: Facilitates positive, easy wire insertion without strand hang-ups; wire twisting is not necessary.
- Nylon-insulated terminals with grip: Feature a brass sleeve for optimum insulation grip, strain relief, and vibration protection. Recessed brass sleeve provides excellent flash-over protection.
- Non-slip ridge: Aids tool positioning for a proper crimp and better workmanship.
- Beveled leading edge: For easy wire insulation entry.
Barrel Styles:
- Non-Insulated Butted Seam: Economical, used where special performance or installation characteristics are not required. Beveled mouth facilitates wire insertion. Max. temp: 347F (175C).
- Non-Insulated Brazed Seam: Beveled mouth facilitates wire insertion. Can be crimped anywhere on the barrel. Silver brazed seam prevents opening under crimping pressure or stress. Stranded wire cannot escape barrel confines. Max. temp: 347F (175C).
- Vinyl Insulated (Brazed and Butted Seams): For applications requiring insulation. Features a flared, rigid molded polyvinyl chloride sleeve, securely attached and funneled for easy wire entry. Wire insulation positions against the funnel, preventing strand hang-up. Crimping barrel and flared sleeve provide excellent electrical contact and mechanical stress relief. Insulation has a non-slip ridge for tool positioning. Industry standard color coding indicates wire range. Insulators rated for -40F to 221F (-40C to 105C). UL Listed and CSA Certified for 600V building wire and 1000V signs/lighting fixtures.
- Nylon Insulated Butted Seam with Insulation Grip: For applications requiring insulation and positive insulation grip. Features a flared, seamless brass sleeve covered by a flared, molded nylon sleeve. Wire insulation positions against the funnel of the brass sleeve. Crimping barrel and flared sleeve provide excellent electrical contact and mechanical stress relief. Crimp tool positioning is nearly mistake-proof due to a step in the nylon insulation. Industry standard color coding indicates wire range. Insulators rated for -40F to 221F (-40C to 105C). UL Listed and CSA Certified for 600V building wire and 1000V signs/lighting fixtures.
Heat Shrink Terminals, Connectors and Disconnects:
3M Heat Shrink products offer superior moisture protection and corrosion resistance in challenging environments. The adhesive-lined heat shrink material, when properly crimped and shrunk, seals against water, salt, steam, and other contaminants. They provide improved pullout strength and strain relief due to the adhesive lining bonding to both the connector and wire insulation. The durable heat shrink tubing resists abrasion, scoring, cut-through, and aging. Available in wire sizes 2210 AWG, they are color-coded for wire range identification and feature transparent tubing for visual inspection.
High Temperature Terminals and Connectors:
Constructed of steel with nickel plating, these terminals and connectors are rated for continuous use at 900F (482C), making them ideal for ovens, motors, light fixtures, and other high-temperature applications. No applicable UL or CSA standard exists for these high-temperature steel parts.
Standard Crimp Terminal and Connector Specifications:
- Materials: Burr-free, annealed, bright-tin plated ETP copper. Barrels are 0.25" long with brazed seams where specified. Insulation grip sleeves are tin-plated brass, securely attached. Insulators are molded polyvinyl chloride or nylon, UL Listed and CSA Certified for 600V building wire and 1000V signs/lighting fixtures. Connector insulators are extruded polyvinyl chloride or nylon, rated at 221F (105C).
- Construction: All insulated terminals feature funnel entry construction to prevent strand hang-up and a crimp ridge for proper tool location. Nylon insulated terminals and connectors have butted seam barrels with insulation grip sleeves. All terminal barrels have multiple V grooves for maximum conductor retention.
