Frequently Asked Questions:
- Insulation Grip: Provides a second crimp on wire insulation for additional strain relief, excellent for high vibration applications.
- Tool Compatibility: Refer to pages 143-144 for a variety of recommended tools for use with 3M terminals.
- Disconnect Insulation: Insulated disconnects have barrel insulation only, while fully insulated disconnects are insulated from the barrel to the receptacle/tab.
- Temperature Resistance: Non-insulated terminals withstand up to 347F (175C); insulated terminals withstand up to 221F (105C).
Glossary of Terms:
- Adapters: To interconnect two connectors already attached to wires.
- Block Fork: Same strength as a fork, designed for terminal blocks with flat sides against barriers.
- Butt Connectors: Feature chamfered barrel ends for fast wire insertion and a built-in wire stop. Must be crimped at both ends.
- Closed-End Connectors: Used for pigtailing two or more wires.
- Fork Terminals: Allow rapid wire connection, typically used on free-standing studs.
- Insulation Grip: Provides strain relief and vibration protection through a brass sleeve.
- Locking Forks: Spring-like tongue locks onto the stud, even if the mounting screw is loose.
- Parallel Connectors: Similar to butt connectors but with overlapped wires and a single center crimp, ideal for limited space.
- Pin Terminals: For installation in compression blocks, commonly used in Europe for terminating stranded wire.
- Quick Connect (Disconnect): Female part connects to a male tab via tongue, offering easy and quick disconnection.
- Ring Tongues: Standard, safe, and reliable tongue style, removable only after the mounting screw is removed.
- Tap Terminals: Require no wire stripping; lay wire in connector and crimp for connection.
Standard Terminal Construction Features:
- One-piece, burr-free construction for maximum electrical conductivity.
- Electrical bright-tin plating for maximum corrosion resistance.
- Annealing to relieve stress points and ensure maximum installed strength.
- Barrel-to-pad transition design minimizes flexing and bending.
- Open-end design allows visual inspection of wire location before and after crimping.
- Multiple V grooves on smaller parts for excellent holding power.
- Injection-molded insulations (vinyl or nylon) rated at 221F (105C).
- Crimp ridge for positive tool location, reducing miscrimps.
- Funnel barrel construction for easy wire insertion without strand hang-ups.
- Nylon insulated terminals with grip feature a brass sleeve for optimum grip and strain relief.
- Non-slip ridge for proper crimping tool positioning.
- Beveled leading edge for easy wire insulation entry.
Barrel Styles:
- Non-Insulated (Butted Seam): Economical, used where special characteristics are not required.
- Non-Insulated (Brazed Seam): Silver brazed seam prevents wire escape during crimping.
- Vinyl Insulated (Brazed/Butted Seam): Features a flared, rigid polyvinyl chloride sleeve for easy wire entry and strain relief.
- Nylon Insulated (Butted Seam with Insulation Grip): Includes a seamless brass sleeve for grip and strain relief, with a step in nylon insulation for easier tool positioning.
Heat Shrink Terminals, Connectors, and Disconnects:
Offer superior moisture protection and corrosion resistance with adhesive-lined heat shrink material. Provide improved mechanical performance with enhanced pullout strength and strain relief. Durable heat shrink tubing resists abrasion and aging. Available in wire sizes 2210 AWG, color-coded for wire range identification.
High Temperature Terminals and Connectors:
Constructed of steel with nickel plating, rated for continuous use at 900F (482C). Ideal for high-temperature applications like ovens, motors, and light fixtures. No applicable UL or CSA standards for these high-temperature steel parts.
